Tips To Protect Your Auto's Windshield

By using these suggestions you can reduce the chance of a costly windshield replacement and improve visibility for safety, on your car or truck.

  • Pick a time, like when fueling your vehicle, to check your windshield for damage.  Pay particular attention to the black edge by looking at large pitted areas for small cracks, stars (numerous cracks from a central point), or circular damage (bullseye).

  • While checking your windshield, don't forget the windshield wipers.  Replace any that are torn, cracked, bent or broken.  A bad wiper can severely scratch a car windshield in a short time.  Don't let a wiper that costs less than $10.00 destroy your windshield.
  • CAUTION: when replacing windshield wiper blades. We have received a number of phone calls from auto owners who have destroyed their windshield when they replaced their wiper blades. Most of the time, they have raised the wiper arm and locked it in the up position and removed the blade. At that point they have either hit the bare arm or the lock has slipped, resulting in the arm springing back against the windshield severely cracking it. Recommendation: Either set the bare arm against the glass until the windshield wiper is installed, or always keep at least one hand on the arm at all times while the wiper blade is removed.
  • Windshield Washer Fluid refill the reservoir at each oil change, this eliminates an empty reservoir when there is a need to clean your windshield. Turning on your windshield wipers when the windshield is dry and dirty can scratch it. Use of a year-round fluid (one that won't freeze) prevents the washer reservoir from cracking and damage to the pump due to frozen fluid.
  • WARNING: windshield washer fluid is deadly when swallowed. Most fluids contain 30 to 60 percent methanol. As little as 2 tablespoons of methanol can kill a child. Purchase this product with a child proof lid. Since this product is dyed a color similar to fruit or sport drinks, (blue, green, purple and yellow) they can be attractive to children. Do not store this product in other containers and keep it away from children.
  • Cleaning use a glass cleaner designed for autos; after all when was the last time a bug kissed a window in your home at 60 MPH or it had road film on it. We find a soft micro-fiber towel works the best. Fold the towel and switch sides regularly using a clean section often to help prevent streaks. On the inside glass, spray the cloth and then wipe the glass. Clean the outside with a side to side motion while doing the inside with an up and down motion. That way if you have streaks you can locate which side they are on. Don't forget to clean the rubber on the wiper blades. Spray glass cleaner on a towel or cloth and wipe it the length of the rubber part of the blade. Repeat until clean. This can improve wiper performance.
  • Use a windshield treatment like Aquapel or Rain X, this will improve visibility in rain and snow for safety. Other benefits include ease of removing bugs, ice and snow.

  • Use table salt, to loosen ice if a scraper or spray deicer fluid isn't available. Keep a salt shaker in the glove box in winter in case of an emergency.
  • Free the windshield wipers if they are frozen to the windshield, before turning them on. This will prevent the wipers from being torn apart, which could scratch your windshield and/or damage the wiper motor.
  • Don't use anything except plastic ice scrapers, metal can scratch your windshield.  We have been told of people using spray cans, pop cans, glass pop bottles, putty knives and yes even a shovel, among other things to remove ice and snow. Unfortunately the windshields and other auto glass were severely scratched doing this.
  • Don't use hot water or anything hot to remove ice or frost, any weak spot including star or bullseye chips can instantly crack your windshield or shatter side and rear windows.  Glass does not like to change temperatures quickly.
  • Don't use Scotchbrite pads or steel wool along with anything else abrasive to clean any auto glass, it will leave scratches behind.
  • Don't use water for windshield washer fluid, it does not clean as good as washer fluid, besides in winter it will freeze and can damage the reservoir and the pump.
  • Don't turn your car or truck off with the windshield wipers on. The windshield wipers in winter can be frozen to the windshield, when you start the vehicle the wipers will turn on immediately, which can damage the wipers and the wiper motor.
