The Weather And Windshield Chip Repair
|
|
Weather plays a big part with windshield chips, both from conditions that can cause it to crack your windshield as well as when it is repaired.
A critical condition to a quality windshield chip repair that besides providing a good looking nearly invisible repair, but also strong repair that can affect your safety is "Dry Weather".
Though the ideal windshield repair temperature is 40 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, we can and have performed safe quality repairs both above and below that temperature range, dry weather is key.
While an auto or truck can be pulled into a covered area away from inclement weather we have found that if the air temperature and dew point are within 3 to 5 degrees we don't recommend doing a repair if the windshield is wet. Dew-point is an indicator of how much moisture is in the air. We have found as the dew-point temperature and air temperature become the same fog is formed.
That is one reason why we recommend repairing your chipped windshield in a timely fashion. Waiting to have the repair performed until it starts cracking results in us getting many calls at a time when a safe repair isn't possible and usually then requires windshield replacement.
Please use the information to the right to help plan a time for your windshield to be repaired. Dry weather and a dew-point greater than 5 degrees is best. Use information on our "Chip Do And Don'ts" page to reduce the risk of a cracked windshield until a repair can be performed.

This damage required replacement on a lease return car due to the trapped water. If only the owner had waited for a dry day or the repair tech had made sure no moisture was in the chip.

The above photo is of a chip I was called on to perform a repair. The chip had been contaminated most likely with water. The repair tech that repaired this windshield had drilled the damage with a large drill, to the laminate, creating further damage to the windshield. The contaminated resin was so bad that it had fallen in the drill hole to the laminate. Over all the remaining resin was very soft. Replacement is now the only option. I checked on the cost of replacement and was told that this repair was a $370 mistake
